Meet Jamie Woodard, one of our many success stories

Jamie Woodard grew up in Bentley Creek, PA. After graduating from high school in 1992, he worked for a Southern Tier contractor for about 10 years. In 2003, he moved to North Carolina, where he attended a gunsmith school. Following his graduation in 2004, Jamie started working for Para USA as the head gunsmith in the warrantee department. Jamie was very proud of the work that he did at Para USA and received many thank you letters from customers for the work he had done on their guns.

When another company bought Para USA in 2007, Jamie decided to move back to the Southern Tier to try use his gunsmith skills. He had a hard time finding work in that field. Jamie once again relied upon his carpentry skills and started working for a small contractor trimming out new houses. With a wife and three children, Jamie found it hard to make ends meet. With encouragement from his wife, he decided to enroll in our adult welding program at GST BOCES.

"Changing careers again was a big step for Jamie, but he worked hard and asked many questions during our welding classes and it paid off," said Mike Lederman, welding instructor.

"The class was great," Jamie said. "Both of the instructors were great guys. If you show interest, they'll give you all the help you need in the classroom, in the welding booth and outside of class. This was a great experience that I'd absolutely recommend."

Two days before the class concluded, Jamie was offered a job as a welder/fabricator at Southern Tier Custom Fabricators in Elmira. He was also chosen as an apprentice candidate for the local 112 Sheet Metal Workers Union and will continue his training through the union for the next four years.
