Practical Nursing Program

The Practical Nursing Program consists of 1200 hours of classroom instruction and clinical experience at local hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other health-related agencies. The program will qualify you to take the New York State Licensing Exam.

The Elmira Bush Campus and Coopers Plains Education Center both offer 10-month, full-time day programs, beginning in September. A part-time evening program will begin at Coopers Plains in the summer.

Potential candidates with a high school diploma or GED are invited to call for information and/or to schedule the mandatory entrance assessment.

Business


Computer Technician

Prerequisite- Must meet pre-admission assessment requirements. No prior computer knowledge/experience is necessary. During this 160-hour course, you will gain knowledge in all aspects of computer functions, including hardware and software. Hardware components include CPU, peripherals, input/output, storage and networking devices. Software will include Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and their networking capabilities. This course will encompass both classroom and lab activities as you are guided through building a computer "from the ground up", which you will take home with you! In addition, this class will prepare you for CompTIA's A+ certification, Fundamentals of networking will also be taught; topics will include the model of networking hardware concepts, cabling, protocols, remote connectivity, network protection, servers and support. A large portion of the class will deal with TCP/IP networking and the Internet. This class plus self study will also prepare you for CompTIA's Network + exam.

    Heavy Equipment Program

    Would you like to have a career driving truck or working in the construction field? Then this class is for you! Earn your CDL A or B license and gain hands-on experience while operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, dump trucks, front end loaders, and more! You will also be instructed in simple plane surveying, lot layout, determining elevations, linear measurements, turning angles and other methods of reading grading plans. Forklift training is also included in this comprehensive training program that will be completed in about 3 months. There will be a combination of weekday classroom time, individually-scheduled drive time with the tractor trailer, plus Saturday classes utilizing the construction equipment – all rolled into one training program.     Prerequisite- Must be 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license and must have passed the DOT physical exam prior to obtaining a CDL Class A Permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles. In this class you will learn to drive a class B vehicle and the heavier class A tractor trailer along with hands on heavy equipment and forklift training. This will include preoperative checks, safety, simple maintenance, and operation techniques involving digging, loading equipment with fill and earth moving. You will have 32 hours of classroom training then up to 40 hours of one-on-one driving instruction scheduled at either the Bush or Cooper's campus. Heavy equipment operation will take place on Saturdays.

    Certified Nurse Aide

    Prerequisite- Must meet pre-admission assessment requirements, physical exam, and proof of current immunizations, also scrubs and white shoes required for clinical experience, but not provided. This is a 130 hour program designed to prepare the learner for employment as a certified Nurse Aide. The course includes basic information about the care of hospitalized patients and residents in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Basic principles and skills required for the care of patients, residents and clients are taught. Topics covered include; responsibilities of the Nurse Aide, legal and ethical issues, patient's and resident's rights, medical terminology and basic anatomy and physiology. Skills taught range from bathing and bed-making to taking the temperature, pulse and respirations. Preventive care and safety in the home is emphasized. At the successful completion of the course students are qualified to take the NYS Certification Exam for Nurse Aide. For admission to the exam, you are required to present 2 forms of valid identification with your signature. The name on both identifications must be the same as the name used to register for the examination! One ID must contain both a current photo and signature, ie: Driver's License or passport.     Home Health Aide

    Phlebotomy Technician Program

The phlebotomy program is designed to provide students with hands on practical skills with great emphasis on the why's and how's of the profession. All students will be required to practice drawing blood on each other during this class. A waiver and Assumption of Risk form will be provided and must be signed prior to the start of class. This is a course that will enable you to obtain an entry level position in a hospital, clinic or nursing home.     Prerequisite-Must meet pre-admission assessment requirements. The Industrial Maintenance Program has been developed as a request through local industry.
