Parley Coburn Elementary School
Jason Johnston, the principal at Parley Coburn, The teachers and administration at Parley Coburn School fully appreciate the importance of Arts in Education. They have invited noteworthy artists into their school such as Tedd Arnold and Peter Catalanotto. A few years ago Paul Taylor came into the school and presented a program which was an authentic arts in education program at its very best. In this program, art was not a perfunctory activity relegated to the periphery of the program, but was the pivot around which the entire program revolved. It truly fulfilled the mission of the Arts in Education program which is Dedicated to teaching and learning the whole curriculum through the arts Students learned about the natural history and culture of Australia through the arts in its many forms. Paul worked closely with the teaching staff during his residency, including Korey Page, the art teacher. Students became familiarized with the animals and culture as they spent a considerable amount of time in the creation of breathtakingly beautiful and intricate murals inspired by Aboriginal dot painting. Working with Ms. Page, the students created their own didgeridoos in art class - authentic Australian musical instruments which they also played themselves. They learned songs, heard stories, role-played and created t-shirts in what was a most comprehensive, enriching and memorable whole arts program.
