BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC AND
STORYTELLING
Assemblies and Programs for Elementary Students
I'M GONNA MAIL MYSELF TO YOU! (Grades Pre-K - 2)
Infectious, easy-to-master singalong songs and engaging
stories, designed to build upon young children's senses
of delight and wonder. Lots of audience participation
and healthy laughter. Great for helping develop
"audience skills," reinforcing feelings of school pride,
and establishing a real sense of community. Guaranteed
to be fun for teachers, too....
GREAT BOOKS/GREAT SONGS (Grades K-5)
Many wonderful children's books have been translated
into equally wonderful music (and vice versa). Hear how
the world of Pooh sounds musically, or how the words of
Shel Silverstein - or Robert Munsch, Min Fong Ho, or
Willy Welch - come to life in song. A lyrical and
eye-opening event for the entire school community. [Ideal
for PARP, literacy events, Library Nights, etc.].
THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE
YEAR (K-2, 3-5)
The Winter Solstice has been a magical time for all the
peoples of the world, throughout history. Christmas,
Hannukah, Kwanzaa and Ramadan are some of the holidays
we'll explore through song and story in this time of
shorter days and longer nights. [Available only in
the month of December].
CAT'S IN THE
CRADLE (AND OTHER TRUE STORIES) [Grades 6-8, 9-12]
Music has a
magical way of bringing people together, and musical
stories have the power to move people to change their
perceptions of themselves and their world. This
interactive concert experience is designed to encourage
participation, build a stronger sense of community, and
provide moments of reflection, insight and humor.
"Excellent,
excellent, excellent! I can't tell you how much I
enjoyed John's show! Invite him back."
ART: AN
ALTERNATIVE TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND VIOLENCE [Grs. 6-12]
Creative
expression provides a wonderful outlet for the pent-up
frustrations and pain that often lead to hurtful
behavior. Songwriting is an especially effective
channel, combining lyrical/linguistic value with the
purely emotional release available through music. We'll
explore examples of this phenomenon through popular
contemporary recordings, and glimpses into this artists
own creative process.
PREPPIES, FREAKS, WANNABEES AND
GEEKS [Grs. 6-8, 9-12]
Traditionally,
school communities have been factionalized, fragmented,
and hard to unite. One obvious roadblock to unity is the
widespread use of labels that separate and isolate
student groups. This lively session examines some of the
labels that describe subgroups in our schools, some of
the reasons for those subgroupings, and some strategies
for bringing people together.
"Super! He
involves everyone and keeps your attention. That's a
good skill."
