Week 1

Essential Question:

What can we learn from exploring new places and things?

TG p. 12k

  • Use the Media Literacy PowerPoint to teach about and/or review Urban, Suburban, and Rural community features
     
  • Use Kidspiration Template (Template 1, or Template 2, or Template 3) to list what they know about Urban, Suburban, and Rural communities
     
  • Use the safe e-mail feature in GST BOCES IDEAS Toolbox Pro to have students send an e-mail to a classmate.  They should include one thing they learned from the story they read.  They can also respond to each other’s e-mails.

TG p. 14-15

  • Instructional PowerPoint that includes the vocabulary words for the story. [students can be given more and more responsibility to create these presentations for vocabulary as the weeks progress].  This might be helpful for students who need help spelling and pronouncing the words. 
    • Teachers could share the responsibility for creating these presentations. 
    • Students can use them at a center during the week.

  • Use Toolbox Pro’s ToolBlog Pro to have students comment on the Morning Warm-Up question:

This week we read about what we might find in a new neighborhood.  Iris moved from an urban neighborhood to a rural one.  What did she investigate?

  • The teacher could show the blog to the class with a projector and enter comments. 

  • A different group of students could be responsible each week for responding to these questions on the blog.


Week 4

Punctuation Game - Self-Checking Excel Activity - Students type the correct punctuation mark to end each sentence and then press the ENTER key.  Once they press ENTER, they will receive feedback letting them know if they are correct or incorrect!
