Sort the words into categories TG p. 152 Vocabulary Activity: Use Excel to chart vocabulary words and synonyms or definitions for each word from the story. Use the Sorting tool to put them in ABC order. Students could use the Smart Board w/ this activity to work collaboratively, or they could do it in the lab on their own computer.

students the
sample
of the completed activity and then have them complete the diagram on
one of the vocabulary words for the week individually or in groups. TG p. 154-167 Use the Kidspiration template with a Smart Board, or copy and paste the template into individual student folders for them to complete about “Penguin Chick.” Use the other Kidspiration template with a Smart Board and have students fill it in for one or more of the paragraphs in the selection “Penguin Chick.” TG p. 170-173 Students could use digital cameras and PowerPoint to make a Photo Essay about a science topic (plants, habitats, etc.) or a topic of their choice. The SCT/C Teacher Center has a set of digital cameras you can borrow. TG p. 173k Connect to Writing: Write a Descriptive Paragraph Use Word to have students write their descriptive paragraph. Use the Reviewing Toolbar to have students correct each other’s spelling and offer suggestions for improving their writing. The teacher could ask for volunteers to allow the whole class to suggest changes using the Smart Board or the computer & projector. TG p. 173n
