Week 1

Essential Question:

What kinds of challenges do people face and how do they meet them?

TG p. 17a

Use Inspiration to develop the CONCEPT VOCABULARY WEB over the 5 weeks of Unit I.  You might use a SMART Board to do this as a whole class activity and encourage students to participate by coming forward to add to the diagram.

Students can substitute the default symbols for meaningful images or they can color code each level of the diagram.

TG p. 18k

Do a KWL chart in MS Word or Inspiration with the SMART Board to find out what they’d like to know about schools in another country.  Students can take turns entering questions using the board.

Have them work in groups to choose a country to research to find answers to their questions.  Provide them with text and Internet sources to guide them in their search.

Use the Inspiration Venn Diagram template to compare/contrast schools in the US with schools from another country.  If done on the SMART Board, students can enter information onto the diagram themselves.  This information can be found in CultureGrams.

Use a student-safe Blog (weblog) to have them comment on the Reader Response questions at the end of each story.  GST BOCES ToolboxPro will soon have its own student-safe blog. Contact

TG p. 18

Plot and Character: Use Inspiration to diagram plot progression or character traits (Character Traits Template)

TG p. 20

Vocabulary:

Do the dictionary lesson on TG p. 41L.  Then students could create a PowerPoint for the vocabulary for each story.  They should include:

  • The word and the number of syllables
  • Record the pronunciation
  • Derivation (Latin, Greek, etc…)
  • Definition
  • Sample Sentence
  • Image (to help remember meaning)
    [one slide per word]

TG p. 27

Cause & Effect: Use the Inspiration template for Cause and Effect (Template 1, Template 2, Template 3) to diagram an example from the story.  Students are responsible for finding examples of cause and effect from the story to diagram.  They could work with partners or in groups.

General Tips:

Some of this is set up already at http://cppreads.pbwiki.com (ask Cheryl Tice for the Password)

Enter your FIX-IT sentences, Writing Prompts, Skills Practice, etc. into a student-safe Wiki site.  Only one student at a time can edit a page in a wiki.

Daily Fix-Its: Students would edit sentences and offer tips for why they fixed it the way they did.  If teacher or students notice a classmate did something incorrectly, they can fix those mistakes as well.  Then you can look at how the page evolved over time as more students entered information during the week.

Writing Prompts: Offer students a writing prompt on the wiki so they can collaboratively write a response.  It can be creative writing prompts.  They can do research and write collaborative essays about a social studies or science topic…  If you have many writing prompts on separate pages, students will be able to find a spot to edit pretty easily.  The point is to leave them up there.  This should help students appreciate the need for revision and collaboration.

Skills Practice: Have students use the wiki as a place to define and practice new skills:

  • Compare / Contrast
  • Sequence of Events
  • Plot
  • Summarizing
  • How to write a paragraph, personal narrative, memoir, essay…
  • Finding the Main Idea
  • Predicting / Drawing Conclusions
  • Figurative Language
  • Vocabulary Words (word structure)
  • Etc………

They could make a “wik-tionary,” with a wiki, about the reading skills and/or the vocabulary they learn throughout the year.  By the end of the school year, they can see how far they’ve come together and they’ll have a great study aid.
