Inside Out
Vocabulary Cards
(PDF): print, cut, and use in a learning center in
your classroom
Vocab Visuals
(Zip file: Word Document): Students use MS Word to insert clipart
images that represent each of the vocabulary words from Week 1. Media Literacy Examples: Find and videotape examples of people doing the right or the wrong thing to discuss in class. Allow students make up their minds about each situation by providing them with questions like: What is happening in this clip? What is your opinion about what you see? Etc… This would be an excellent time to discuss copyright, and why it is important to cite your sources! TG p. 142k Writing / Vocabulary: Pet Care:
Students choose a pet and complete the MS Word
form and then create a Mini Book using a Publisher Template
to create a How-To Guide to care for a pet Social Studies: START A JOURNAL Activity: During this unit, start a RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS Wiki or Blog. Have students post thoughts about the nice things their classmates, parents, friends or teachers do for them each day throughout the unit. Check it out periodically as a class.
Technology: GET INVOLVED Activity: As a class, visit www.volunteermatch.org/ to find volunteer opportunities in your community. Example: Perhaps your class could get involved with a charity like the Food Bank and work to “Do the Right Thing” and raise awareness about hunger in your school community and ways to alleviate the hunger. Keep track of donations using an Excel spreadsheet. Help students set it up to automatically total the types of food so they know what they need most. They could make a newsletter in Word to parents and local grocery stores requesting donations of specific types of food needed. TG p.143 A New Home: Teach students to write a Comparative Analysis of 2 people, places, or things using the Inspiration Template (you may need to ask to have the program installed at the lab in your school). Or you could use the Kidspiration Template to Compare/Contrast Mexico & the US. TG p. 146-158 Inside Out: Have students work in groups in MS Word to rewrite the story from another character’s point of view (i.e. – Curtis, the teacher, etc.). They should include what that character is thinking about Francisco. The Reader Response Questions on p. 158 could be done as part of a Blog. TG p. 161c Vocabulary Strategy - Prefixes: Use the SMART Board to play a Word Structure game with prefixes.
Prefix
Challenge (Zip file: Word Document): students print out and
write as many words beginning with the prefixes un- or dis- as
possible. Build Concept Vocabulary: Use a SMART Board and Inspiration or Kidspiration to create a graphic organizer about Kindness. Speaking & Listening: Persuasive Speech & Listening to a Persuasive Speech – groups could use PowerPoint to set up their speeches about acts of kindness. Teach them not to type every word of their speech onto the slides. The information on each slide should be done in outline form. Teach them to use animation to create anticipation for the next topic by making each phrase appear on mouse click… (this activity could accompany the Day 2 activity on TG p 161G – Eliminate Wordiness – in addition to or instead of the worksheet). During this assignment, teach students how to do peer assessment using rubrics or checklists…
