Essential Question: How do we get to school?

Week 1

TG p. 11

Listening: Ride the Bus Letter Matching Activity

Writing: I Am… Kidspiration Activity

Have students click the symbol in the center of the diagram (I Am…).  They will type their name in the symbol.  Then they can use the SYMBOL MAKER in Kidspiration to draw a picture of themselves.

This would be a great activity to do for open house and have parents find their child’s seat using the information in their diagrams.

Social Studies Activity: Bus Ride

Transportation Graph – Excel Activity

This spreadsheet can be used with a projector and, if available, a Smart Board.  Ask students who ride the bus to raise their hands.  Click once in cell B2 and type the number of students (my sample answer is 10).  Do the same for students who ride in a car (cell B3) and walk (cell B4) to school.  Record the results.

Check out the Graph by clicking the tab that says GRAPH in the workbook.  Talk about what the graph shows.  Discuss the parts of a graph.  Which form of transportation is most popular in your class?

If you did this with each of the kindergarten classes in your school, you could compare all of the graphs.

Then have students build their own pictographs by drawing a bus, car or person walking and arranging the “bars” on the wall for each type of transportation.
