Technology Suggestions

Excel

  • Record and graph lost teeth throughout the year

  • Record the daily weather or plant growth over a period of time

  • Type words and sort them into ABC order

  • Type sentences into Excel - students can use the Text-to-Speech features of the program (XP or 2003) to listen to them

  • Self-checking worksheets

Internet

  • Use ToolboxPro to create educational games to sharpen vocabulary skills

  • The Multimedia Test portion of ToolboxPro allows for recorded responses

  • Use interactive websites to help sharpen skills (zoo webcams, virtual manipulatives, etc....)

Kidspiration

  • Use Kidspiration to create graphic organizer templates for students to complete (the program speaks to them)

  • Set up a sorting activity for students on a variety of topics (heat vs. light sources, land vs. sea animals, healthy/non-healthy foods, vowel sounds, etc.)

  • Do an "All About Me" or family tree diagram with students

Interactive White Boards (Promethean, SMART...)

  • Create an interactive game for students to play to learn a concept or to collaboratively practice vocabulary skills

  • Use the Notebook software and gallery to create an activity about telling time, graphing concepts, coordinates, grammar concepts, spelling, storytelling, geography concepts, etc...

  • Make a KWL chart and use the "markers" to have students write their thoughts about the topic onto the graphic organizer

Interactive Group Software (Tom Snyder Productions)

  • Fizz & Martina's Math (1-6) - problem solving & mathematical communication

  • Graph Club (K-4) - helps students develop graphing skills

  • Neighborhood Map Machine (1-5) - develop map skills

  • Science Court Explorations (2-4) - videos and hands-on manipulatives help students distinguish evidence from opinion; students collect and analyze data to come up with their prediction about the outcome of the "case."

  • Timeliner (K-12) - create a timeline about famous inventors, scientists, inventions, evolution of a scientific theory, etc. ... (if students each make their own, have groups of students merge their work into one timeline to compare their work)

Paint / KidPix

  • Draw and label the life cycle of a butterfly

  • Draw and label the parts of a flower

  • Scan and open a hand-drawn picture (outlined in black fine-tip marker) into Paint or KidPix and use the tools in the program to color it in

  • Save the picture and insert it into a Word document

PowerPoint

  • Create an eBook with PowerPoint  using images and words; students could record their voices reading each page

  • Create a review module for students to practice a variety of skills using images, action buttons, recorded sounds, and/or video clips

  • Give students a web portal made in PowerPoint to offer small amounts of information about a topic with interactive internet links to more information

Publisher

  • Set up a template for students to create a brochure about a topic (urban, suburban, rural; geometric shapes; the letter B; etc.)

  • Collaboratively create a class newsletter on a SMART Board

  • Use Publisher to create invitations to parents for presentations the students will do throughout the year that parents can attend

  • Make a mini-book or poster about a topic (but first, set up a template)

Web 2.0

  • Google Docs - create a form to have your students take an online quiz

  • Create a classroom blog or wiki to keep parents up to date on classroom news and activities so they can comment on your updates

  • Use EtherPad to do a collaborative writing assignment

Windows Recorder

  • Record students reading passages from a book to assess fluency

  • Have students record their writing and save the recording to insert into Word documents and PowerPoint presentations

Word

  • Make a KWL chart and use it with an Interactive White Board to have students take turns entering information about a topic

  • Use ClipArt & AutoShapes to help illustrate writing

  • Have students create a cover for their writing folders, including their name, a picture, and the school year

  • Use a digital camera to take pictures of nature, classroom activity, etc.  Students can insert them into Word and type sentences about the pictures they chose

  • Use picture hyperlinks to launch websites (instead of the URL, or a word or phrase)
