What Happens In Classrooms?

A survey of 4000 public and private school teachers concludes that most use a combination of reform strategies and traditional practices in their classrooms. Released in June by the National Center for Education Statistics, "What Happens in Classrooms?" is the first national study to attempt to look behind classroom doors across all levels of schooling and in abroad range of subjects. Teachers who participated were surveyed in 1994-95; federal researchers then compared their responses with logs of what actually goes on in classrooms to ensure the information's veracity.

While nearly all the teachers interviewed said they regularly used some form of traditional whole-group instruction, just as many had taken more progressive tacks. And 86 percent said they had provided instruction to small groups on a weekly basis. Three-quarters said they used supplementary materials in class once a week. Reform practices were used more frequently in elementary and middle schools than in high schools, however.
