ADDED TO THE NYS REGISTERED DENTAL ASSISTING LAW, 2007

Recent changes to New York State Education Law and Regulations of the Commissioner of Education have increased the scope of practice for New York State licensed registered dental assistants.  A memorandum and pamphlet was mailed September 2007 to all dentists, dental hygienists, registered dental assistants & other interested parties in New York State.  Exclusionary wording in the Law reads as follows:  "a registered dental assistant shall not diagnose, perform surgical procedures, perform irreversible procedures or procedures that would alter the hard or soft tissue of the oral & maxillofacial area or perform any other procedures determined by the department".

The most significant change in the Law is that

"only if a registered dental assistant AND their employer feel, after formal training, it is within the assistant's ability & expertise, under direct supervision of a dentist that assistant may:

  • place & remove temporary restorations
  • place, condense, & carve amalgam restorations
  • place & condense non-metallic restorations"
