Citation Help:

Most databases create a bibliographic citation for you. If you are using a source that does not offer this feature (such as a book), use the Research Guide and/or Citation Machine to create your bibliography.

If you are studying Afghanistan, here is the citation for the autobiography you are reading:

Ahmedi, Farah. The Story of My Life : An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky. New York : Simon Spotlight Entertainment, 2005.

Template for Writing Part II Tasks from English Regents

Directions: Write a research paper based on the situation described below.

      The Situation:

One major idea stressed in Global History and Geography is the concept of interdependence or the mutual dependence of people on each other.  People and nations have the ability to investigate, analyze, and discuss the issues that will affect their future.  Your research paper will focus on a problem or issue facing the world today.

“…asking the very largest of questions about our future is not merely a matter of intellectual curiosity. It is a matter of survival….”  Alvin Toffler  The Third World

Your Task: Write a research paper for both English and Global History. Using relevant information from your research, explain your problem or issue.  Explain why it is a problem. Choose a nation or region of the world where this problem is prevalent. Explain the problem relative to the region, the people and the events, which encompass the problem.  Explain how the people in the region are dealing with the problem.  Conclude by discussing your viewpoint of the problem and the possible solutions or actions that the nation, region or world community can take or is taking to work through the problem.

Guidelines:

·        Tell your audience what it needs to know to understand the following: 1) your problem or issue; 2) why it is a problem; 3)  a nation or region of the world where the problem is prevalent; 4)  the problem relative to the region, the people and the events which encompass the problem; 5) the people of the region and how they are dealing with the problem; and 6) your viewpoint of the problem and the possible solutions or actions that the nation, region or world community can take or is taking to work through the problem.

·        Use specific, accurate, and relevant information from your research material to support your argument (or to develop your discussion, etc.)

·        Use a tone and level of language appropriate for English and Global History essays.

·        Organize your ideas in a logical and coherent manner.

·        Be sure to indicate any words taken directly from the resource materials by using quotation marks and parentheticals.  All bibliographical material must be included the last page of your paper, the citation page.

·        Follow the conventions of standard written English.

Paragraph 1:

Introduction:   Using the situation and the quotation, create a general introduction. (What does it mean to be dependent on each other?  Why must people throughout the world study contemporary issues?  Define  “…asking the very largest of questions about our future is not merely a matter of intellectual curiosity. It is a matter of  survival…” Alvin Toffler’s The Third World. )

Suggested:      One problem facing the world is ________________.

This problem is prevalent in ___________________.

A solution must be found for the problem of ______________.

(You must use the word solution in this paragraph!)

Thesis:  State what you are proving in the paper.  State the crisis/problem, the region/country, the time period, the people and events that are part of the problem, the present status of the problem, and a potential solution.

Section 2:

Background:    Explain the crisis/problem. Tell about the region or geographical location of the problem, and the time period ( must be CURRENT! 90s-2000s)

Section 3:

Answer:  Why is the problem in this region? How do the problem and region impact each other?  (the environment, the government, etc.)

 Section 4:

Answer:  What are the events which lead to problem, occurred during the problem, and will possibly be an aftermath of the problem?

 Section 5:

Answer: Who are the people, or governments, or religious factions, or political parties involved in problem, its history and its aftermath?

 Section 6:

Answer: How is the problem presently being dealt with and who are the people or groups of people dealing with the problem?

Section 7:

Answer: What do you, the writer, believe is the ideal solution? Do NOT use “I”!

 Section 8:\

Conclusion to the paper.  (See introduction and thesis, as well as, the general content of the paper.)
