Esthetics (enhancing the appearance of the face, neck, arms, legs and shoulders) is a 600-hour licensing course in the field of skin care. The program covers anatomy and physiology, bacteriology, sterilization, structure and function of the skin, facial procedures, waxing, basic make-up techniques, business practices and the use of various machines. Salons, spa's and doctors offices throughout the state offer flexible employment opportunities to licensed estheticians. Major retailers, department stores and manufacturers also hire skin therapists who can earn commissions with demonstrated sales records. Many graduates combine their beauty skills with their business training to open their own businesses.
People frequently ask what type of services an Esthetician can do for someone. Examples include facial and body treatments which may include deep cleansing, exfoliation and massage, extraction of pore blockages, removal of unwanted hair, make-up application and advise on the proper care and products for your skin.
Students must complete a 600-hour, New York State approved course of study and pass both the New York State written and practical examinations to get a license to operate in this state. As proof of successful completion of schooling, you must have the Affirmation of a New York State Approved School. The section of the application must be filled out by GST BOCES and signed by the Administrator of Adult Services.
